Italy 16th century Head of a decapitated man Stone, carved in the round, covered with patina. The head of a decapitated man held up by a hand in this fragmentary small sculpture, with blood flowing from his neck, is probably to be interpreted as the head of John the Baptist from a depiction of Salome. The underside of the hand is drilled and placed on a plexiglass stand. Height 12 cm. Provenance Collection Dr. Hubert Wilm, Munich. - Their sale at the 435th Lempertz auction, Cologne, 3.12.1952, lot 88 - By succession to the present owner.
