Description

Mecheln Anfang 16. Jahrhundert

Mechelen at the beginning of the 16th century St. Anthony Wood, carved three-quarters round, flattened on the back. Large remnants of the original colored paint, only partially replaced in the darker areas. High-quality depiction of the hermit in monastic costume with cap, turned slightly to the side in a measured contrapposto pose. A pig is depicted at the side at his feet as a characteristic attribute, and Antonius is also holding an open book in his left hand. The mark of the city of Mechelen is probably only vaguely recognizable on the reverse. Right forearm lost, lateral loss to the plinth. Minor chips. Loosely mounted on an old but probably not original wooden base. Height 34.5 cm (with plinth).
