Description
Wohl Salzburg 2. Viertel 15. Jahrhundert
Probably Salzburg 2nd quarter 15th century Pietà Wood, carved three-quarters round, flattened and deeply hollowed on the back. Remnants of an older painted version, largely gone over, missing parts repainted. Depiction of the Virgin sitting on a bench, holding the body of her dead son on her knees. The characteristic design of the sculpture in the swinging hems of the headscarf and the folds of the cloak reveal the Pietà to be an Austrian work from the period of the "Beautiful Madonnas". Few fine and short vertical cracks. Minor bumping. 52 x 54 x 20 cm. Provenance South German private collection.
