Inspired by his master Jan Brueghel the Elder, the Antwerp painter Adriaen van Stalbemt conceived this depiction from the Old Testament. In the episode, Isaac's servant Eliezer is instructed to choose a wife for his master, whereupon he meets the young Rebekah sent by God at the well (Genesis 24-29). Van Stalbemt's scene takes place in front of a rich forest and a vast landscape in the background, in contrast to the rather closed staging of his contemporary and role model Gillis van Coninxloo.
