Portrait of Lucien Murat as a boy Gouache on ivory. Bust portrait of the ten-year-old prince in red hussar uniform. Signed and dated "Dun 1813" in the right margin. Vertical shrinkage crack with break in frame at top. 6.0 x 4.7 cm. Original black marble frame with gilt bezel and ormulu mounts. Nicolas François Dun, 1813. Depicted is Napoléon Lucien Murat, Prince of Naples (1803 - 1778), also Prince of Pontecorvo between 1812 and 1815. He was the second son of Joachim Murat, King of Naples and his wife Caroline Bonaparte, and thus a nephew of Napoléon I. Born in Lunéville, the miniaturist Dun (1764 - 1832) worked for the royal court in Naples and portrayed the aristocracy of the Napoleonic era. Expert opinion Marketing license for ivory is available (DE-S-0506-23). Provenance Christie's Geneva auction on May 18, 1994, lot 336. Rhenish private collection.
