An identical piece with different patina can be found in the Musée du Louvre collection, Département des Sculptures du Moyen Age, de la Renaissance et des temps modernes, DA 33 D. David D'Angers probably met the philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Ritter von Schelling (1775 - 1854) during his trip to Germany in Munich in 1834, where he painted a portrait of him, like several other of his contemporaries.
