Nessus robs Deïanira Bronze with black-brown patina. Cast in several parts and mounted. H 20.5 cm. Modern ebonized wooden base H 6.5, W 30.5, D 19.5 cm. Rome, attributed, 18th/19th century. When Hercules and his wife Deïaneira leave Kalydos, they come to the river Euenos (Evinos), which is in flood. The centaur Nessus offers to carry the woman on his back to the other bank, but then gallops off with her. Hercules then shoots him with a poisoned arrow. The finely chiseled small bronze has a famous model, namely an interpretation of the theme by Giambologna. The Dresden State Art Collections are in possession of this object, which came to the Saxon court as a gift from Francesco I de' Medici in 1587. Provenance Italian private collection.
