Pair of candlesticks 'Retour d'Egypte' Silver. Rectangular, stepped plinth with surrounding palmette frieze. The conical column shaft with opposing mascarons in Egyptian style; the vase-shaped spouts with inserted eaves bowls. Marks: Soldering stamp 13, as yet unidentified MZ "M". H 26.5 cm, weight 659 g. Germany, around 1810. Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798-1801 sparked a veritable enthusiasm for distant Egypt and its history. In addition to the major porcelain manufacturers, European silversmiths were also inspired by the new source.
