(1588). THUCYDIDE. DE BELLO PELOPONNESIACO LIBRI VIII. Idem latine, ex interpretatione Laurentii Vallae ab Henrico Stephano recognita. (Geneva: Henri Estienne, 1588). 2 parts in 1 vol. in-folio of [20]-621-[14]-1bl. and 73-[7] pages, stiff vellum, ribbed spine (period binding). Second and best edition of Thucydides printed by the Estetiens, and also the first to give the Greek text accompanied by the Latin version. The latter was provided by Laurent Valla and revised by Estienne, who also corrected and clarified the text. Estienne also compares some passages in Valla's translation with the French version by Claude de Seyssel. Ammien Marcellin's Life of Thucydides has also been accompanied by Isaac Casaubon's Latin translation and notes. Light rings on the last leaves, spine split, handwritten bookplate F. Chevalier.
