Rare first edition. In his notice (in Latin) to the reader, the famous printer reveals that he conceived the idea of publishing this work during a visit many years ago to the collections amassed by J. Dalechamps, who was born in Caen in 1513 and died in Lyon in 1588. This work has long enjoyed a great reputation; it contains in the 2 books of this first volume, nearly 1000 ENGRAVED FIGURES ON WOOD of plants and insects, which first appeared in a 1579 Lyon edition of Matthioli's commentaries. A few uniformly browned leaves, copy entirely ruled in red ink, stamp of a religious college on the title, an old table of Linné is attached (8 manuscript pages).
