In his foreword, Vinet gives his motive for writing this book: on his return from Portugal in 1549, he noted that following the rebellion against the gabelle, King Henri II had decided to abolish all bells and clocks in Bordeaux, hence the need for the people of Bordeaux to master the technique of sundials in order to keep track of the time. Enlarged second edition, with dated title page. Numerous sketches, woodcuts in the text and a fold-out plate. Beautifully patinated binding (USTC 19405, 8 copies).
