(1581). CARTARI (Vincenzo). LES IMAGES DES DIEUX DES ANCIENS, CONTENANS LES IDOLES, COUSTUMES, CEREMONIES & autres choses appartenans à la Religion des payens. Lyon, Guichard Julliéron for Barthelémy Honorat, 1581. Fort in-4° of [16]-637-[39]-2bl. pages, half brown basane, spine ribbed and decorated (modern binding). First edition published the same year by Etienne Michel. It is illustrated with a fine portrait of the translator, Antoine Du Verdier, and 88 SINGULAR AND LARGE WOODEN FIGURES (130 x 95 mm) depicting the gods and heroes of mythology, with the ceremonies, customs and rites belonging to the pagan religion. These woodcuts are attributed to the Lyon painter and engraver Thomas Arande, known as Le Maître à la Capeline. Minor defects, but a good copy.
