Description

(1578). ESTIENNE (Henri). TWO DIALOGUES. DU NOUVEAU LANGUAGE FRANÇOIS ITALIANIZE... De plusieurs nouveautez, qui ont accompagné ceste nouveauté de language. De quelques courtisianismes modernes, & De quelques singularitez courtisanesques. (Geneva, Henri Estienne, 1578). Small in-8, [32]-623 pages, long-grained blue morocco, triple gilt fillet on covers, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges (Koehler). FIRST EDITION. In this work, Henri Estienne takes up in a satyrical tone the theme that is dear to him, already set out in another form in the draft of the book entitled De la Préexcellence du langage françois and the Traité de la conformité... thus forming a kind of trilogy and once again condemning the intrusion of Italian words into the language of the Court under Charles IX. "It's the healthy reason and nervous dialectic of the 16th century, served by a language that seems to reveal, a hundred and fifty years in advance, the brilliant manner of Voltaire". (Ch. Nodier). A fine copy, elegantly bound in morocco by Koehler (CDM, 91-92) (Schreiber, no. 203) (USTC 27709).
