Lyon, Guichard Jelayron for Barthélémy Honorat, 1578. In-8, [16]-464-[6] pages, half green bradel cloth (19th century binding). Doni divides the worlds into celestial and terrestrial ones (Monde sage, monde des fols, grand monde, monde mélé, monde imagine...) and infernal ones (L'enfer des Escoliers, des mal-mariez, des putains et ruffians, des soldats et capitaines poltrons, des piètres docteurs, des usuriers, des poëtes et compositeurs ignorants...). Princeps edition of this rare and singular book, in the French translation by Gabriel Chappuis (1546-1613), dedicated to Antoine Du Verdier and decorated with curious woodcut medallions at the head of the "worlds". New edition of this poem of over 7,000 lines, which the author had originally published under the title Les Combatz du fidelle papiste pelerin romain contre l'apostat Priapiste (or antipapiste) and which is directed against Calvinism and its followers. This is a reprint with a few changes at the beginning of the poem. The names of the interlocutors have been changed and are now called the Celestial Knight and the Chevalier Terrestre. The first edition under this title appeared in 1553. This edition is illustrated with 29 small woodcuts in the text. Minor damage to headpieces and hinges, title and last 3 leaves repaired in the margins, one leaf angularly missing due to the initial size of the leaf. The binder's knife has slightly trimmed the printed marginalia on 1 or 2 leaves. printed marginalia.

Homann, ca. 1720, framed under passepartout. Not examined outside frame, a few visible imperfections along middle-fold, some staining.

A RARE PAIR OF BRASS MOUNTED MAHOGANY CELASTIAL AND TERRESTIAL GLOBES by John & William Cary, London, dat. 1808 H. 65/D. 42 cm The tripot stand with inlaid compass, the globes covered with parchment paper, the rondiste labelled with the months and astrological signs. The terrestrial globe is labelled "Cary's New Terrestrial Globe Delined From the best Authorities extant: Exhigiting the different Tracks of Captain Cook and the New Discoveries made by him and other Circumnavigators LONDON Made and Sold by J. & W. Cary, Strand Jany 1st. 1808". The celestial globe with depicted zodiac signs labelled "Cary's New Celestial Globe on which are correctly laid down upwards of 3500 Stars Selected from the most recurate observations and calculated for the year 1800. With the extent of each constellation accurately determined by Mb. Gilpin of the Royal Society Manufactured and sold by J. & W. Cary London Strand Jany 1st. 180(8)".
