(1578). DU ROSIER (Simon). ANTITHESIS CHRISTI ET ANTICHRISTI, videlicet Papæ. Genève, Eustache Vignon, 1578. In-12, 147 pages, blond calf, smooth spine decorated, red pages (18th century binding). A SINGULAR BOOK CONTAINING SOME VERY CURIOUS WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS. It is decorated with 36 figures in the text attributed to Pierre Eskrich, known as Pierre Vase or Cruche, who is said to have executed them during a stay in Geneva, after Lucas Cranach's "Passional". These highly expressive woodcuts are printed opposite each other. The left-hand page shows Christ's acts of humility, while the corresponding scene shows the Pope in a lustful frame. The latter is always depicted in vulgar guise, sometimes even with the head of a crowned animal. From the library of the great scholar Richard, (3 stamps!!).
