Jean Papon, a friend of Honoré d'Urfé and Lieutenant General of Montbrison, was portrayed in L'Astrée as the Druid Adamas. A celebrated jurisconsult, he became Maître des Requêtes to Catherine de Médicis in 1529 and was ennobled by Henri III in 1578. Fine impressions from the Lyon workshop of Jean de Tournes, embellished with numerous sifted-ground initials. The bindings are damaged, and there are a few stains and foxing.
