Description

(1570). LA PLAISANTE ET AMOUREUSE HISTOIRE DU CHEVALIER DORE ET DE LA PUCELLE SURNOMMEE CUEUR D'ACIER. Lyon, François Durelle for Benoît Rigaud, 1570. In-16 of 176 unencumbered leaves, blackcurrant Jansenist morocco, interior gilt lace framing a morocco lining of the same hue, double endpaper, gilt edges (Joly, r.d.). An extremely rare volume. This is a novel taken from Perceforest (represented as Péléon) in order to "refresh" the subject. Third edition illustrated with 40 CHARMING woodcut VIGNETTES very similar (same dimensions: 50 x 32) to those of the Hécatongraphie, and therefore more Parisian than Lyonnais. A very fine copy in lined morocco by Robert Joly, employed by Gruel and then following in his father's footsteps in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century (Baudrier III, 268, wrong coll.) (USTC 31227, 1 ex. of 1577) (Brunet IV, 686).
