Reprint of the famous Valgrisi edition first published in 1556, this edition, with the italic text printed on 2 columns, is illustrated with 51 full-page woodcuts set in beautiful frames. At the head of each song, the verse argument is also framed. After the text of Orlando Furioso, follows, under a special title and dated 1565, a part added in this edition: I cinque canti di M. Lodovico Ariosto, i quali seguono la materia del Furioso, con gli argomenti in rima, et discorsi di M. Luigi Grotta d'Adna. Copy in mediocre condition, wormholes.

Venice, Vicenzo Valgrisi, 1556. In-4, (12) ff, 556 pp, (60) ff, text on 2 cols, figs, some light spotting, mod. ebony morocco, ribbed spine decorated with gilt thread. First edition by Valgrisi, with critical notes by the renowned scholar Girolamo Ruscelli in the original edition. The title is set in a woodcut portico, and the work is illustrated with 51 full-page woodcuts framed with grotesques, cherubs and figures. They are new compared to previous editions, particularly those by Giolito, and are full-page for the first time. According to Kristeller, they were engraved after Giovanni Battista Dossi, brother of Dosso Dossi, both painters of the Ferrara school. Handwritten bookplate of Count Carlo-Francesco Cigogna-Mozzoni.

One volume in-8 (462 pp, 1 f), full contemporary vellum. Freckling and ink cross overprint in text margins, stains and soiling. A charming edition that retains its antique appearance. It is illustrated with a large woodcut depicting Ariosto on the title page and a large number of slightly worn woodcuts in the text. The Orlando Furioso is considered to be the inspiration for the Romans de Chevalerie. In chapter VI (Enquête dans la bibliothèque), Cervantes scratches Ariosto, "the Christian poet", whose Spanish translation of Roland Furieux had expunged certain passages deemed licentious. Antique bookplate in ink: D. Clos. Neither Brunet nor Palau mention this late edition.
