(1560-66). POLDO D'ALBENAS (Jean). DISCOURS HISTORIAL DE L'ANTIQUE ET ILLUSTRE CITE DE NISMES. Lyon, by Guillaume Rouille, 1560. In-folio of [22]-225-[14] pages, brown calf, cold-stamped boards, ribbed spine (period binding). Description of the city, especially the Amphitheatre, the Maison carrée, the Temple de la Fontaine and the tombs, all of which are carefully described. The illustration includes a handsome title frame, 14 DOUBLE OFF-TEXT PLATES mounted in 7 plates that were mounted at the time, namely: La Maison carrée (2) - Temple de la Fontaine (2) - Pont du Gard (1) - Amphithéatre dict les Arènes (2), 4 full-page figures representing a plan of the city walls, a view of the city and two statues, as well as 5 vignettes of numismatics and epigraphy, all wood-engraved. The volume ends with a table of places, cities and rivers. Two curious chapters concern mullet fishing in the Etang de Latera and the "petits fromaiges vermeillons" made in Les Baux de Provence.
