First edition, the title of which is set in a handsome arched frame by de Tournes, decorated with a medallion portrait of the 31-year-old author on the verso and 2 large initials; it is dedicated to M. de Saint-Antot, first president of Rouen. L'Univers is a large-scale philosophical discourse in prose, whose title is self-explanatory; the new heliocentric theory is praised, and Copernicus' name appears several times. Light rings at the bottom of the leaves and in the bottom margin (Tchemerzine V, 894) (Cartier no. 384) (USTC 8516, 13 copies).
