Description

(1555). OBSEQUENT (Jules). DES PRODIGES, PLUS TROIS LIVRES DE POLYDORE VERGILE SUR LA MEME MATIERE. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1555. In-8, [16]-292-[12] pages, speckled basane, ornate spine (18th century binding). First edition of George de la Bouthière's translation. Jean de Tournes had published an Italian version the previous year, but this one is of far superior execution; it is illustrated with 51 woodcuts attributable to Bernard Salomon; eight of these woodcuts, including six for Polydore Vergile, appear here for the first time. The title is set in a beautiful "arabesque en cul de lampe" frame. Repairs to title without missing and to the corners of a few leaves, weak hinges, minor defects (Cartier 306) (Mortimer, French, 389) (USTC 8153).
