Livre physic, médical, Alchymic et Dispensatif de toutes substantiales liqueurs et appareils de vins de diverses saveurs... Lyon, Balthazar Arnoullet, 1555. In-4° of [26(sur32)]-325-[3] pages, stiff vellum, cold fleurons at the corners, very ornate ribbed spine, red tr. (period binding). Rare first French edition in the translation by Barthélémy Aneau, a Lyonnais poet who was hanged during the religious procession of June 1561. Conrad Gesner, under a pseudonym, delivers his methods of distillation in its medical applications and his recommendations on the Bain-Marie, on furnaces, on the quintessence of human blood, eggs, flesh and honey, of drinking gold or the elixir of life. This edition is illustrated with nearly 60 WOODWORKS IN TEXT describing the various distilling machines and plants used; they are attributed to Clément Bourry and were specially carved for this book. The title and 2 introductory leaves are missing, otherwise a good copy. Handwritten bookplate Desmaisons (Caillet 4509) (Baudrier X, 151) (USTC 27450).
