Description

(1553). STRADA (Jacopo). EPITOME THESAURI ANTIQUITATUM, hoc est, impp. rom. orientalium et occidentalium iconum, ex antiquis numismatibus quam fidelissime deliniatarum. Lyon, Jean de Tournes for Jacques de Strada and Thomas Guérin, 1553. In-4° of [88]-339-[3] pages, brown calf, ornate ribbed spine, gilt edges (18th century binding). First Latin edition published simultaneously with the French edition. Printed by Jean de Tournes (although his name does not appear), it is adorned with a large woodcut on the title with, on the verso, the coat of arms of Fugger, to whom the work is dedicated, and some 400 MEDAILLON PORTRAITS on a black background. Strada's work is doubly interesting from the point of view of numismatics and engraving; it was wood-engraved under the direction of Bernard Salomon by the best historical carvers. Light rings, ruled copy with handwritten bookplate on title. (Baudrier X, 365) (USTC 156064, 9 ex.).
