Description

(1553). STRADA (J. de). EPITOME DU THRESOR DES ANTIQUITEZ, C'EST-A-DIRE POURTRAITS DES VRAYES MEDAILLES DES EMPP. BOTH ROMAN AND WESTERN. Lyon (Jean de Tournes) for Jaques de Strada and Thomas Guérin, 1553. In-4°, [24]-394-[30] pages, half blond basane, ribbed spine (19th century binding). First French edition, published simultaneously with the Latin edition. French translation by Jean Louveau and printed by Jean de Tournes (although his name does not appear); it is adorned with a large woodcut on the title with, on the verso, the coat of arms of Fugger, to whom the work is dedicated, and some 400 MEDAILLON PORTRAITS on a black background. Strada's work is doubly interesting from the point of view of numismatics and engraving; it was woodcut under the direction of Bernard Salomon by the best historical engravers. (Baudrier X, 366). Several leaves pitted and light rings in margins, ex. a little unbound, endpapers missing. Average condition. Handwritten bookplate on title. (USTC 18010).
