(1552). DIOSCORIDE. DE MEDICINALI MATERIA LIBRI SEX, Ioanne Ruellio Suessionensi interprete. Lyon, Balthazar Arnoullet, 1552. In-8 of [32]-790-1bl.-[16] pages, brown calf, boards decorated with a double cold frame with gilded fleurons at the corners and 2 lions in the center, Estienne Besnier in gilded letters (Period binding). Printed in Vienna, this is the second of three editions by Balthazar Arnoullet. Translated by the physician and botanist Jean Ruel (1474-1537), it is illustrated with the very JOLIE SUITE DE FIGURES D'ANIMAUX ET DE PLANTES GRAVEES SUR BOIS by Clément Boussy, which appeared in 1549 in the Fuchs edition given by the same publisher. Arnoullet added 12 animal vignettes (Salamander, grasshopper, frog...). Copy incomplete by 2 leaves (153, 169), but with the 8 additional leaves of plants found only in a small number of copies, bound at the end as Baudrier points out. Interesting binding adorned with 2 heraldic lions in the center of the boards with the owner's name of the time in gilt lettering "Estienne Besnier".
