(1552). ANEAU (Barthélémy). PICTA POESIS. Lyon, Macé Bonhomme, 1552. In-8, 118-[2] pages, terra-cotta chagrin, double gilt fillet on covers, ornate spine with gilt title throughout, interior gilt frieze, gilt edges (19th century binding). First edition of one of the most charming books of emblems published at the time. It is illustrated with 108 VIGNETTES, 2 of which are repeated, most measuring 36 x 50, finely engraved on copper by Pierre Eskrich. One of them, intended to criticize the corruption of magistrates, was removed in later editions. A wide-margined copy, very pure in proof, well preserved in a well-executed romantic binding.
