Ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1583; large folio (44x29 cm), 19th-century half-grain (very rubbed, first cover detached). Text in double columns. Title (reinforced) engraved by Abraham Bruyn after Crispin van den Broeck. An interesting world map dated 1571, doubled on double page by Arias Montanus (this one in antique colors), in which is sketched a land mass at the location of the then unknown northern continent of Australia, two engraved plates on double page (plan and view of the temple of Jerusalem), seven full-page engravings and 82 engravings (17.5x11.5 cm) in-text by Jan Wiericx, Jan de Sadeler and A. de Bruyn after Crispin van den Broeck and Peter van der Borcht. Woodcut lettering (some marginal wetness, two pages reinforced at outer edge). Bible bound without the map of Israel and Canaan. Handwritten bookplate "Hic liber est, Claudii Hazard cantoris & canoniei eclesia St Liphardi de 1743". One of the most impressive and beautiful editions of the Plantinian press (Voet).
