Description

[ALSACE LORRAINE] Exceptional set of six glass mugs in a cardboard and felt box. They bear a Hebrew inscription wishing long life to the Katsin (eminent person) Itsik (Isaac) NETTER and his wife Mindele. Eastern France, early 19th century. Height: 7 cm One of the cups with a chip and two others with microchips. The Netters are one of the oldest Jewish families in Alsace, particularly the Rosheim branch. Counting several preposés généraux of the Jewish Nation in Alsace, they played an important role for the community and were notably behind the construction of the Rosheim synagogue. The Netter family, originally from Duppigheim, came to Rosheim in 1665, thanks to a letter of recommendation from Baron de Montclar, Lieutenant General of the Royal Armies. The family seems to have been in Rosheim long before the Thirty Years' War, and tradition has it that the Netters are descended from the illustrious Josselmann de Rosheim. Isaac Lehman Netter (circa 1738-1812), born in Rosheim and died in Nancy, married Mindele Marx in his second marriage. He was the son of the General Commissioner of the Jewish Nation in Alsace.
