(1510). HERODOTUS - ISOCRATES. HISTORIAE PARENTIS MEMORATISSIMI, NOVEM MUSAE CUM PRAENOTAMENTIS ET ADDITIONIBUS, NON ANTEA IMPRESSIS. Paris, Jehan Petit and Jean Marchant, 1510. Small in-4° of [42]-216 (mal chiffr. 213)-[1] leaves, blond half calf, smooth spine decorated (19th century binding). First published in Venice in 1474, this Paris edition of the Latin translation by Laurent Valla (1406-1457) is the only one printed in France during the Renaissance. It includes all nine books of Herodotus' survey and is illustrated with a large woodcut depicting THE ABDUCTION OF THE YOUNG WOMEN OF ARGOS BY THE PHENICIANS. Circles and wetness, numerous repairs and tears on the last leaves with missing letters. Handwritten bookplate of a Carmelite convent. (USTC, 143615, 5 ex.).
