Description

(1508). BEROALDE (Ph.). COMMENTARII CAESARIS RECOGNITI. (Lyon, Balthazar de Gabiano, June 20, 1508). In-8 of [3]-252-[40] leaves, stiff vellum overlay (contemporary binding). Aldine counterfeit made in Lyon, said to be rarer than the original edition. Renouard states "Evidently printed by the same Balthazar of Lyon who gave the Suetonius of 1508 and several other editions of the same period...". Edition given by the famous Italian humanist Philippe Béroalde, to whom we owe numerous editions of ancient Latin authors. A few light rings and foxing, otherwise a good copy with a painted title frame featuring a coat-of-arms surrounded by 2 dolphins surmounted by a fleur-de-lys (USTC 14337, 6 copies) (Renouard p. 309, n°25) (Baudrier VII, 22).
