(1503). LORRIS, (Guillaume de) - MEUNG (Jehan de). LE ROMAN DE LA ROSE. C'EST LE ROMANT DE LA ROSE, MORALISE CLER ET NET TRASLATE DE RIME EN PROSE PAR VOS HUBLE MOLINET. Lyon, Guillaume Balsarin, 1503. In-4° gothic, 138 (of 153) leaves, 45 lines per page, fawn half-basin, ornate ribbed spine (19th century binding). A work of considerable influence in the Middle Ages, and one of the most important monuments of French language and poetry. Begun around 1230 by Guillaume de Lorris, it was taken up again forty years later by J. de Meung, who added almost 18,000 verses to the 400 left by his predecessor. First edition of the prose transcription made by J. Molinet (1435-1507) at the request of Philippe de Clèves, in which the author adds a number of moralities to the story of the novel. The illustration, featuring UNE CENTAINE DE BOIS, is inspired by the first editions from Lyon. 15 leaves are missing, including the title (1-5,8,9,10,15,69,72,151,152,153,154), a woodcut on page 94, 2 stained leaves (40/41), light rings at the top of the leaves throughout.
