Born in Italy as Giovanni da Fidanza, Saint Bonaventure died in Lyon in 1274. A popular and influential treatise on virtues and vices, the "Dieta Salutis" deals with spirituality, emphasizing discipline and stressing the importance of meditation; it guides the reader through the stages of purification, illumination and union with God.
