(1502). PLUTARCH. VITAE NUPER QUAM DILIGENTISSIME RECOGNITAE: QUIBUS TRES UIRORUM ILLUSTRIUM VITAE ADITAE FUERUNT. Venice, Donnino Pinzi, February 15, 1502. 2 parts of [1]-145 and 151 leaves, in 1 folio volume, stiff vellum, blue edges (antique binding). Precious edition with commentary by Girolamo Squarciafico, adorned with a beautifully designed woodcut set in a black-backed frame (150 x 140 mm) depicting Theseus fighting the Minotaur in a woven wooden arena. The attitudes of the two combatants and the conception of the subject recall the graphic work of Antonio Pollaiolo, a 15th-century Florentine painter and sculptor, notably famous for his engravings of nude male combatants. Small tears in the margins of the first 5 leaves, soiled title, a few light stains on some leaves, small marginal gallery on the last few leaves. An important handwritten note from the Olschki bookshop is glued to the back cover (Sander, 5784) (USTC 849953).
