Description

(1498). JUVENAL. FAMILIARE COMENTU CUM ANTONII MANCINELLI viri eruditissimi explanatione. Argumenta satyrarum juvenalis per Antonium Mancinellum... Lyon, Nicolas Wolf for Etienne Gaynard, December 14, 1498. In-4° gothic, [6]-198 leaves, modern basane, gilt fleurons in the center and corners, cold-stamped fillets (modern pastiche binding). ORIGINAL EDITION OF THE SATYRES OF JUVENAL with commentary by Badius, which reproduces, with corrections by the editor, the Venice edition of 1492 with commentary by Mancinelli. The title, printed in red and black, is illustrated with a fine three-compartment woodcut of Mancinelli, Juvenal and Badius, drawn by Guillaume Leroy and reproduced by Baudrier. This rare edition in Gothic type is remarkable, as Vingtrinier and Claudin point out: "Etienne Gueynard had several Lyon printers, such as Wolf, work for him. All his editions are remarkable for the luxurious ornamentation of the historiated letters, and are always decorated with woodcuts. Nicolas Wolf was a founder and printer in Lyon from 1492 to 1512. He printed several works for the bookseller Gaynard, and made a name for himself by printing this book by Juvenal, corrected and commented by Josse Bade". Minor soiling on a few leaves, some words underlined and lines in old handwriting on the title page. One spine split over several centimeters, a wide-margined copy. Handwritten bookplate of a religious institution (A. Claudin. Archives du bibliophile, n° 187 janvier 188) (Baudrier XI, 190, 218) (Renouard, Badius, II, 535) (ISTC, ij00656000).
