(1482). VORAGINE (Jacques de). LEGENDA AUREA SANCTORUM, SIVE LOMBARDICA HISTORIA. Nuremberg, Anton Koberger, October 1, 1482. Gothic folio of [1]-182 (of 183) leaves, brown calf, cold-stamped boards decorated with fantastic animals in small squares, modern binding on which the boards and spine of the first binding have been replaced. One of the most famous texts of the medieval period. The Golden Legend, recounting the lives and martyrdoms of the first saints of the calendar, enjoyed immense popularity as soon as printing was invented; in the 15th century, there were almost 150 editions throughout Europe. Printed on 2 columns by Anton Koberger, type foundryman and printer, one of the first in Nuremberg, who quickly became the largest printer in Germany, employing over 100 workers. Folio 10 missing, boards worn, some marginal rings and handwritten annotations from the period (USTC 746129).
