(1476). VORAGINE (Jacques de). DE LEGENDA AUREA SANCTORUM, SIVE LOMBARDICA HISTORIA. (Strasbourg, Georg Husner, c. 1476). Large Gothic folio volume of 396 (out of 420) leaves, stamped calf on wood, ribbed spine (period binding). Very rare incunabula edition of one of the most famous texts of the medieval period. The Golden Legend, recounting the lives and martyrdoms of the first saints of the calendar, enjoyed immense popularity as soon as printing was invented; in the 15th century, there were almost 150 editions throughout Europe. Beautifully printed by Georges Husner, a Strasbourg printer and type foundryman, one of the first to set up shop in Strasbourg. The work is entirely rubricated in red and has retained its original margins, the paper is very thick. Leaf 390 is torn in two and missing, leaves 388 and 419 and the first 24 leaves are missing. Mottling, a few stains, repair to folio 407, a few letters missing from the last folio, spine completely rebound (ISTC, ij00088000).
