Description

Gerard Dou

Gerard Dou (successor) (1613 - Leiden - 1675) - Saint in the study Oil on wood, parquetted. (Late 17th century/early 18th century). 43.4 x 35.3 cm. With the same collector's label (?) verso and on the reverse of the frame. Framed. We would like to thank Ellis Dullaart, RKD, The Hague, for valuable information during the cataloging of this lot (e-mail of 13.7.2023). The present subject appears to be inspired by Gerard Dou and other Leiden artists such as Quiringh van Brekelenkam, Jacob van Spreeuwen and Jan Adriaensz. van Staveren. It shows the hermit or saint reading, surrounded by characteristic attributes such as a lantern, crucifix, rosary, skull, inkwell, flask, etc. The arched wooden frame through which we view the hermit is another reference to Dou - his stone arched windows became a real trademark during his lifetime. "Provenance: Private property, southern Germany." Taxation: taxed on a differential basis (VAT: Margin Scheme)
