Otto Modersohn

Otto Modersohn (1865 Soest - Rotenburg 1943), Genoveva. The story of Genoveva of Brabant (ca. 730-750) was probably first recorded in the Maria Laach monastery in the 14th century. She found her way into the world of German fairy tales and legends and became a popular motif in German painting, especially during the late Romantic period. Well-known depictions can be found in the works of Ludwig Richter (1803-1884) and Hans Thoma (1839-1924), among others. Otto Modersohn also varied this motif several times in his compositional drawings around 1900 - Firmly mounted on card in three corners, thus paper somewhat wavy. Surface slightly rubbed in places. Sheet edges slightly irregularly trimmed and with small lesions and losses. Otherwise in good condition. This edition was published in 1934 with the title "Odalisque" by The Print Club, Cleveland/Ohio, as "Print Club Publication No. 12". Duthuit-Matisse 233. Black chalk and pastel on light blue paper. (Around 1900). Approx. 14 x 19.5 cm. Provenance: Estate of Otto Modersohn; Private property, Lower Saxony; Private property, Southern Germany, through succession to the present owners.
