Description

Polychrome painted enamel plaque with gold highlights depicting the Sybil Europe. Standing, she raises the index finger of her right hand to the sky in a gesture of divination; phylactery bearing the inscription SYBILA EVROPA. Salmon fondant counter-glaze. Limoges, attributed to Jean or Joseph Limosin, first half 17th century Height: 13.4 cm - Width: 5 cm On a green fabric background. (small accidents and restorations) The figure of this Sybil is clearly inspired by the Europa in the British Museum (inv. 1854,0605.1.l), part of a series on ancient prophetesses by Léonard Limosin circa 1540. It is likely that a son or grandson of the famous enamel painter was inspired by an earlier composition in the family workshop. Other Sybilles that may be similar to the one presented here have not been found. Expert: Madame Laurence Fligny.
