The author states beside the title "Fragment de La maison du Berger. Poëme [sic]". The poem "Les chemins de fer" forms the last 4 sevenths of "La maison du Berger" poem first published on July 8, 1844, in the Revue des Deux Mondes, then in the collection Les Destinées. "Let us avoid these paths. - Their journey is without grace, Since it is as swift, on its iron lines, As the arrow thrown through space From bow to goal, whistling through the air.
