Prof. Renée Sintenis, Charioteer A young warrior driving a chariot with four harnessed horses, etching, c. 1925, signed "Sintenis" in pencil below the depiction on the right, dedication in pencil on the reverse "Ein gutes neues Jahr wünscht Ihnen R.S.", evenly slightly yellowed and somewhat stained, matted and framed behind glass, dimensions approx. 12.2 x 14.8 cm. Artist information: actually Renate Alice Sintenis, married name Weiss, German sculptor, sculptor. Sculptor, sculptor, draughtswoman, illustrator and graphic artist (1888 Glatz/Schlesien to 1965 Berlin), grew up in Neuruppin and Stuttgart, initially trained as a secretary and took her first drawing lessons at the Stuttgart art school, moved to Berlin in 1908, studied with a short interruption from 1908-11 at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin (Kunstgewerbeschule) under Wilhelm Haverkamp and Leo von König, from 1915 member of the Berlin Secession and participated in its exhibitions, friend of Rainer Maria Rilke and Joachim Ringelnatz, Promoted by Alfred Flechtheim from 1920 and represented at exhibitions in Paris and New York, among others, member of the Prussian Academy of Arts Berlin from 1929 and appointed lecturer in 1931, expelled from the Berlin Academy in 1934 as "degenerate" and banned from working, 1947-56 lecturer and from 1955 professor at the Academy of Fine Arts (HBK) Berlin-Charlottenburg, member of the Association of Visual Artists (VBK) of the GDR, 1955 admission to the Academy of Fine Arts West Berlin, received numerous honours such as the Art Prize of the City of Berlin, the Order Pour le Mérite and the Grand Federal Cross of Merit, active in Berlin, source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", "Käthe, Paula und der ganze Rest", Müller-Singer, Dressler, Eisold "Künstler in der DDR" and Wikipedia.
