LEWIS (Meriwether) and William CLARK. History of the expedition under the command of captains Lewis and Clark, to the sources of the Missouri thence across the Rocky Mountains and down the River Columbia to the Pacific Ocean, performed during the years 1804-5-6. Philadelphia, J. Maxwell for Bradford Inskeep and Abm. H. Inskeep of New York, 1814. 2 vols. in-8 (13,3x21 cm), I: xxviii pp., 470 pp. ; II: ix pp. (blank verso), 522 pp. [Appendix, pp. 449-464 missing] ; half-fauwn basane with corners, cold scroll, ornate smooth spine, red title-pieces (Mid 19th c. binding). Field, Indian bibliography, no. 928; Printing and the Mind of Man, 272; Sabin, Bib. americana, vol. X, 40828: "exhibits not only some valuable geographical notices, but very copious and amusing details respecting the manners, habits, and diversions of the North American tribes". First edition of the most complete official report of the most important trans-American expedition led by Lewis and Clark, compiled by Nicholas Biddle from the documents left by Lewis and the scientific notes and journals of the expedition's principal members. It was then published by Paul Allen. The story is an integral part of the founding myth of the United States. In April 1803, French Louisiana became the property of the United States, and an expedition was financed by President Jefferson to find a navigable land route from the Mississippi to the Pacific coast. Captains Lewis and Clark, the leaders of this epic crossing of America, set out from St. Louis in May 1804, accompanied by almost 40 men, and travelled over 8,000 km in two years, reaching the Columbia River in November 1805. It was a long journey to reach these little-known regions of the Northwest and back... Serving both a political and scientific purpose, this expedition enabled the federal government to consolidate its authority over the entire territory, and above all to bring back valuable evidence in topography, natural history and ethnology, and to develop trade relations with the Indians. This first edition is illustrated with 5 plans (I: Fortification; The falls and portage - II: Great falls of Columbia River; The great shoot; Mouth of Columbia River), and a large fold-out map of the American West. Complete with the extremely accurate and detailed folding map (80x31 cm), drawn by Samuel Lewis after William Clark, placed at the beginning of volume I (A map of Lewis and Clark's track, across the western portion of North America from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean). Printed on very fine paper, it was purchased separately, as a valuable addition to the edition, and therefore rarely appears in copies. This edition also contains an Appendix (completing Volume II, it is incomplete in this copy on pp. 449-464); it was not included in the English edition published shortly afterwards, in the same year. Scratched (illegible) oval stamp on the title pages and last leaf of each volume (surmounted by a mark added in pen and then bleached, on the titles); also found, without mark, on both volumes, pp. 100, 200, 400... Volume I, on verso of flyleaf, old handwritten note partly scratched out: "(...) Bar Canada 1849". Binding rubbed with some scuffing; trace of label at head of spine; tiny wormhole at foot of Volume II. Slightly loose seams visible at beginning and end of volumes and endpapers renewed in the past (rebacked in the past?). Freckles and stains. On the fold-out map, a few pale freckles and minimal holes; 3 old reinforcements at the folds, including one to restore a tear on the right-hand side. Some old reading marks in pencil (I: note pp. 43, 54, 123; II: a few lines, note p. 65...). Volume II, sections Mm and Nn inverted. Volume II, Appendix, missing quires 3M and 3N (pp. 449-464: end of text on Indians and beginning of table of remarkable places) - Expertise Madame Ségolène Beauchamp
