Description

NASA GEMINI IV mission Photograph of astronaut Ed White floating in space over California, during the first American EVA. Vintage print, numbered NASA (S-65-30273) in black in the upper margin. Printed NASA-MSC legend on back. Dated June 3, 1965. 25.5 x 20.5 cm with margins. Marginal handling marks / Scotch tape. Gemini Titan IV (GT-4) was the second crewed mission of the Gemini program. James McDivitt and Edward White successfully completed the 4-day, 62-orbit flight between June 3 and 7, 1965. Only a few weeks before liftoff, the mission program was revised to include the first spacewalk (EVA - Extra-Vehicular Activity) by an American astronaut; a direct response to the success of cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, who performed the first EVA on March 18, 1965. On this occasion, White remained outside the spacecraft for 23 minutes. Radio transcript - this image was taken at T+04:37 after liftoff: 04:36:14 McDivitt: Okay. Get out in front where I can see you again. 04:36:16 White: Yes. 04:36:18 McDivitt: I've only got about three (photos) on the Hasselblad. 04:36:20 White: Okay. 04:36:22 McDivitt: Where are you? 04:36:24 White: Right out in front now. I don't have the control I had any more without that gun. 04:36:28 McDivitt: Yes, I noticed that. [...] 04:36:45 White: All right. There's no difficulty in recontacting the spacecraft. It's all very soft, particularly as long as you move nice and slow. I'm very thankful to have the experience. It's great, Gus. Right now I'm right on top of the spacecraft - just above Jim's window. I'll bring myself in and put myself out into your view, Jim. 04:37:09 McDivitt: Okay. Hold it and I'll take your picture. 04:37:24 White: Right now I could maneuver much better if I didn't have the gun with the camera on it, because I have to tie one hand up with it. 04:37:31 McDivitt:Okay. Stay right there if you can.
