Description

NASA GEMINI IV Mission Photograph of astronaut Ed White floating in space, during the first American EVA. Vintage chromogenic print on "A Kodak Paper", numbered NASA in red (S-65-30429) in the upper margin. Printed NASA-MSC legend on back. Dated June 3, 1965. 25.5 x 20.5 cm with margins. Gemini Titan IV (GT-4) was the second crewed mission of the Gemini program. James McDivitt and Edward White successfully completed the 4-day, 62-orbit flight between June 3 and 7, 1965. Only a few weeks before liftoff, the mission program was revised to include the first spacewalk (EVA - Extra-Vehicular Activity) by an American astronaut; a direct response to the success of cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, who performed the first EVA on March 18, 1965. On this occasion, White remained outside the spacecraft for 23 minutes. In this close-up, the porthole through which McDivitt took this photograph is clearly visible on the gold visor of his helmet. Radio transcript - this image was taken at T+04:42 after lift-off: 04:42:19 McDivitt: Ed, smile. 04:42:26 White: I'm looking right down your gun barrel. All. 04:42:28 McDivitt: Let me take a closeup picture of you. 04:42:30 White: Okay. Just a minute. 04:42:31 McDivitt: You smeared up my windshield, you dirty dog! 04:42:34 White: Did I really? 04:42:35 McDivitt: Yes. 04:42:37 White: Well, hand me out a kleenex and I'll clean it. 04:42:40 McDivitt: Ha! See how it's all smeared up there? 04:42:44 White: Yes. 04:42:45 McDivitt: It looks like there is a coating on the outside and you've rubbed it off. Bibliography : Schick and Van Haaften, The View From Space: American Astronaut Photography 1962-72, 1988, cover. Andrew Chaikin, SPACE, Carlton Books Ltd 2004, p.59 photograph described and reproduced in color.
