Description

Cast bronze neck cross. Late 15th - 17th century. The obverse and reverse molds of a 15th-century encolpion model were used to cast this cross. This encolpion model features, on the obverse, the Crucifixion surmounted by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove surmounted by the letters "IСЪ ХЪ" (Jesus Christ). On either side of the Crucified One are bust figures of the Apostle John, surmounted by the letter "А" and the Mother of God, surmounted by the letter "K". Above Christ's arms, the inscription "СБ" (Son of God) to the left and "НИ" (Nika-Victory). On the reverse is the Mother of God and in circular medallions, two six-winged seraphim (above and below) and two archangels holding a scepter (right and left). 6.5 x 4 x 0.4 cm
