Theodor Friedrich von SCHUBERT (1789-1865) Detailed plan of the capital St. Petersburg, surveyed at 1:4200 scale under the direction of General-Major Schubert, 1828 Printed by the Army's topographic depot. This plan comprises 24 copper-engraved leaves numbered I to XXIV, arranged in six columns and four lines mounted on canvas: I-II-III-IV-V-VI: each sheet: 71 x 51 cm VII-VIII-IX-X-XI-XII: each sheet: 51 x 51 cm XIII-XIV-XV-XVI-XVII-XVIII: each sheet: 51 x 51 cm XIX-XX-XXI-XXII-XXIII-XXIV: each sheet: 71 x 51 cm 252.5 x 303.5 cm This plan is based on topographical surveys carried out in the 1820s. Of all the plans of St. Petersburg ever published and available to the public, this is the one with the largest scale. It accurately shows buildings, courtyards, sidewalks, waterways, alleys and vegetation. It was the finest example of 19th-century urban cartography in Russia.
