Nikolai Egorovich SVERCHKOV (1817-1898) Affidavit (at a standstill) mounted by Ch. Webber, 1864 Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. A label on the frame reads "Affidavit / Born in 1861 by JAVELOT and DALHIA, winner in 1864 of the Derby universel and the grand prix de la société d'Encouragement à Bruxelles, Trained and ridden by TOM OSBORNE, winner in 1866 of the DEAUVILLE cup and several other prizes, Trained by J. BOLDRICK, ridden by Ch. WEBBER, owned by Mr. Hippolyte LUNEL". 54 x 64 cm Large contemporary wood and gilded plaster frame with cartel. Minor damage to frame. Affidavit is a chestnut belonging to Hippolyte Lunel (1832-1906), speculator, financier and stable owner until 1868. This horse raced from 1864 to 1866: second in the Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) at Chantilly in 1864, he took part in the Grand Prix de Bade in September 1864. In 1866, he was the first winner of the newly-created Coupe de Deauville (renamed Grand Prix de Deauville in 1871). Dictionnaire du sport français by Ned Pearson, Paris 1872. Webber (Charles ?) was a jockey who in 1866 rode the horse Étoile Filante, owned by Hippolyte Lunel. The Derby (Journal universel des courses et du sport) of May 22, 1866 announces that Tom Osborne is no longer in the service of Mr. H. Lunel and has been replaced by Boldrick. There is also a lithograph of Affidavit after Jonny Audy (1844-1882).
