Person: Duke François-Hercule de Valois, Alençon (1555 Saint-Germain-En-Laye - 1584 Château-Thierry) The youngest son of King Henry II of France of the House of Valois and his wife, Catherine de Medici. All the other sons of the ruling couple became kings of France in succession (Francis II 1559-1560, Charles IX 1560-1574, Henry III 1574-1589) or, as in one case, died in infancy. François-Hercule held numerous titles: he was Prince of France as well as Duke of Alençon and Château-Thierry, Count of Le Perche, Mantes, Meulan (1566-1584), Duke of Évreux and Count of Dreux (1569-1584), Count of Maine, Duke of Anjou, Touraine and Berry (1576-1584), Count of Flanders (1582-1583) and seven times Pair of France. His early death at the age of 29, unmarried and childless, led to the passing of the succession from the House of Valois to the Bourbon Henry of Navarre. François-Hercule was buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis.
