Buffet's style is immediately recognizable, with straight, dry lines and a dark palette. The artist spares paint, leaving little room for color and texture. He depicts the obscure post-war period and offers here a powerful work of poignant drawing. The angular, severe lines and the red, which stands out from the coldness of the rest of the composition, reveal a brutality tinged with misery.
