Tray circa 1925 In lacquered and patinated metal with geometric decoration signed and numbered 5273 on the back H. 33 cm L. 54 cm Provenance: > Galerie Anne-Sophie Duval, Paris > Collection Alain Lesieutre, Paris > Sotheby's New York, June 7, 2016, lot no. 59 Bibliography: > Felix Marcilhac, Jean Dunand, His Life and Works, London, 1991, p. 270, our plate reproduced under no. 633 Condition report: Restoration and wear A major figure in Art Deco, Dunand befriended François-Louis Schmied as a teenager at the École des arts industriels in Geneva. Excelling in many techniques, he designed works in lacquer, bronze and mosaics.... many of which, like the tray we present, demonstrate that sense of geometric composition that Art Deco pushed to its apogee. Throughout his career, he collaborated with some of the world's greatest names: publisher Schmied, decorator Ruhlmann, couturiers Poiret and Schiaparelli are just a few examples.
